Excerpts

Praise for the Book
"Sujata Kommuru provides warm, fun crayoned backgrounds and drawings for the picture book Mother’s Love Can Conquer Any Fear! …The overall theme celebrating motherhood and bravery is accompanied by insights on the threat of evil and how to handle it. The story’s gentle moral messages and celebration of mothers successfully evolves in an unexpected way. The result is a picture book reader that is a fun, different standout from the fable-oriented stories typically available to young readers, and a special recommendation for any collection strong in multicultural settings, fables, and animal stories." ~ Diane Donovan Midwest Book Review
"Author Subhash Kommuru and illustrator Sujata Kommuru have combined animals, storytelling, and expressive illustrations to successfully share the core values of family, community, and courage with young readers." ~ The Children’s Book Review
"This cute tale reminds the reader of the true value of a mother’s love. Even though evil surrounds the pleasant village in this story, it is the everlasting love that saves the day. This book brings that statement to life." ~ Kathryn Starke, Founder/CEO, Creative Minds Publications, LLC

My Review

By Lynda Dickson
Kaalia the crow terrorizes the chicken inhabitants of Anand Nagar. The chickens call on the wise Shastriji to try to solve the problem. But even the brave rooster, Raja, can't deal with this bully. In fact, nothing works until Kaalia goes too far and forces new mother Ganga to take matters into her own hands (or is that "wings" or "feet"?). Will this bully finally learn his lesson?
This is a story about bullying and overcoming fear. The moral is, as the title states, that "mother's love can conquer any fear"; a mother will go to any lengths to protect her young. I loved the colorful crayon drawings by Sujata Kommuru, made to look like children's drawings. Even the text appears to be hand-written in crayon. There are a few problems with punctuation, and the vocabulary and Hindi names might be a bit difficult for young ones. Overall, however, this is a humorous and uplifting tale which your children are sure to enjoy.

About the Author and the Illustrator
Subhash and Sujata Kommuru hail from India. They migrated to the United States along with their memories of childhood and youth. Now that they are parents, just like every immigrant they crave to introduce their child to the culture and values of their upbringing. Yet it is challenging to teach something while you are in the midst of adjusting to a different culture yourself.
Subhash and Sujata both work in different disciplines and have different styles and backgrounds, but it is the upbringing of their son that puts them on the same page. That exact place where they meet is captured and reflected in their stories, where Subhash can express in words, and Sujata can illustrate them beautifully. Where he puts it in black and white, she adds color to it. You get the idea!
These stories are their attempt to share a glimpse of their childhood days with their son. He is their inspiration to write short stories that have meaning to them and provide teaching in some shape or form.
